Des Moines Botanical Garden

This is one of my favorites! It’s a beautiful memory I have of going to the Des Moines Botanical Garden when I was little. We didn’t go very many places, so this was a real treat.

The big glass dome filled with incredible plants and flowers was like a wonderland. I think part of my desire to travel the world came from reading the descriptions of the plants here and wanting to go see them in the wild.

About the series:

My new artwork series is a meditation on my childhood growing up off-the-grid in rural Iowa. My goal is to write a children’s book using this series of 20 paintings as the illustration for the book. Thank you to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation – BeWildReWild – Community Artist Grant for your generous support of my project.

  1. Keep it up, Amiga!

All this beauty and color…YOU did that. I remember going there as a young girl as well…with my family, a real treat. Felt a thousand miles away. My eyes were wide. It was so warm. My own street this morning is a bit like that. After a 24 hour rain, the sun is out, the colors are intense, the blooms are blooming, fragrant….ahhh.
