My First Amate Bark Painting

I’ve always loved the Mexican traditional art form of Amate Bark Painting. Whenever my Mom and I would travel to her home country of Mexico, we would make a direct line for the fabulous markets where these gorgeous handmade paintings were sold. We’ve collected quite a few between the two of us. ❤

The scenes are usually of village life, showing weddings, farming, people out shopping, and the amazing natural scenery of Mexico like volcanoes, mountains, cactus plants, and rivers. And, of course, the centerpiece of life – the sun.

It was my Mom who suggested that I try combining the traditional Amate style with my own Lupita painting style. The Amate style is handmade on tree bark, usually with acrylic paints and ink. In this case, my painting is created by me drawing with an Apple Pencil on my iPad using the design program Procreate.  I left the software frame on these close-ups so you could see a bit of how it works and all the many layers of color involved.

Two completely different approaches, but in the end, the same bright colors and feeling of celebration and joy. I learned so much making this first painting as far as technique, color, and how to use the vertical space on the page. I felt more connected to my Mexican family and to my Mom while I painted. I’m so glad I took her advice and tried something completely new.

Custom Blankets

My newest project is to create custom blankets for my boys. I wanted them to have something special with my artwork on it that they can use and enjoy. I started with two of my favorite photographs, then made the art portraits from there. These portraits are digital made by hand using my Apple pencil and the design program Procreate.

Then I added a background to each one – Japanese paper designs. Finally, I uploaded the finished paintings to Spoonflower online to be made into custom fabric. I chose the “minky” fabric for it’s soft and fuzzy quality. I was so excited when the fabric arrived! Wow, it’s so much brighter and more vivid than I even imagined. And the paintings look so cool in this large size.

The next step is to sew them into blankets. I’ll post again with the finished blankets…my hope is I can finish before Christmas.

Introducing Our New Baby

Introducing our new baby, little Archer. He’s the sweetest tiny guy and it’s been such a beautiful and busy eight months since he was born. I’ve been wanting to add him into the family portrait painting I made before he came along. It’s taken me awhile, but I’ve finally finished. I thought it would be cool to show you my process for making portraits.

ArchiePortraitProcess1

I start out with a photograph that I love. In this case, I’m adding baby Archer to an existing painting, so I had a print out of the family portrait handy. That way I can match the style and colors.

ArchiePortraitProcess3

It usually takes me several tries to get the sketch how I like it. I begin with the basic form, then add in my Lupita style circles, chevrons, stars, stripes, and style. These are just two of the fifteen or so sketches I made on plain white paper. Then the fourth one is the final sketch on watercolor paper.

ArchiePortraitProcess4

Let the painting begin! I almost always start with the face then move outward in a circle from there. I’m not sure why…it just seems the most natural way for me to paint a person.

ArchiePortraitProcess2

Once the painting is complete, I scan it into my computer and use Photoshop to add it to the larger family portrait.

I hope to eventually re-paint the entire family portrait so all the colors match exactly. With two small children at home it may take some time, but one day soon! 🙂
