New Painting – Chaos Lupita

I thought I could be finished painting. I went months and months without picking up a pen or brush. I felt so devastated by my mom’s severe stroke…and her brain damage and paralysis that followed. To see her continued suffering through a very difficult recovery process, a long recovery process, and not be able to really help her – it has been so hard for all my family.

But my Mom, she’s a warrior. And she has been fighting every single day to make progress with her physical therapy. She’s able to sit in a wheelchair for a few hours now despite still being paralyzed on the left side. She’s able to eat a normal diet now, after months and months of eating therapy. We’re so proud and grateful for these improvements. We’re so thankful we still have her with us.

And…amid all of this…Mom started painting again. She’s doing a bird series. She asks the nurses to move her next to the window for natural light. She has a set-up on her tray to help her manage the paper and paint and brushes. She paints with her one good hand and uses her paralyzed hand to hold down the paper. Unfortunately, Mom has lost her muscle memory she developed from a lifetime of painting as a result of her brain damage. This means she has to start all over again. She has to learn to paint all over again. And yet, Mom continues to paint because she loves it. Because it gives her joy. Because it helps her connect with the world.

Mom has inspired me. And here I go. Drawing again. I have a new series I’m working on. I’m calling it the “Chaos Lupita” series because that’s how this year has been for me. Art imitating life.

Many blessings,

Emily Lupita

My First Amate Bark Painting

I’ve always loved the Mexican traditional art form of Amate Bark Painting. Whenever my Mom and I would travel to her home country of Mexico, we would make a direct line for the fabulous markets where these gorgeous handmade paintings were sold. We’ve collected quite a few between the two of us. ❤

45816369_328365141050811_3219018292601552896_n

The scenes are usually of village life, showing weddings, farming, people out shopping, and the amazing natural scenery of Mexico like volcanoes, mountains, cactus plants, and rivers. And, of course, the centerpiece of life – the sun.

45828277_322319621928707_7054202695250345984_n

It was my Mom who suggested that I try combining the traditional Amate style with my own Lupita painting style. The Amate style is handmade on tree bark, usually with acrylic paints and ink. In this case, my painting is created by me drawing with an Apple Pencil on my iPad using the design program Procreate.  I left the software frame on these close-ups so you could see a bit of how it works and all the many layers of color involved.

45832675_1506014602865113_7055388870728220672_n

Two completely different approaches, but in the end, the same bright colors and feeling of celebration and joy. I learned so much making this first painting as far as technique, color, and how to use the vertical space on the page. I felt more connected to my Mexican family and to my Mom while I painted. I’m so glad I took her advice and tried something completely new.

Custom Blankets

My newest project is to create custom blankets for my boys. I wanted them to have something special with my artwork on it that they can use and enjoy. I started with two of my favorite photographs, then made the art portraits from there. These portraits are digital made by hand using my Apple pencil and the design program Procreate.

boysblankets

Then I added a background to each one – Japanese paper designs. Finally, I uploaded the finished paintings to Spoonflower online to be made into custom fabric. I chose the “minky” fabric for it’s soft and fuzzy quality. I was so excited when the fabric arrived! Wow, it’s so much brighter and more vivid than I even imagined. And the paintings look so cool in this large size.

The next step is to sew them into blankets. I’ll post again with the finished blankets…my hope is I can finish before Christmas.

Blessings,

Lupita Christmas Tree Ornaments

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio – Lupita Christmas Tree Ornaments

I’m delighted to introduce to you my new art project…Lupita Christmas Ornaments!

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration
Original Painting 3×3 Ornament

For the last several years, I have been experimenting with how to create Christmas tree ornaments from my Lupita artwork. With the help of my mother’s artistic vision and encouragement, I have tried out so many different ideas over the years…including adventures in printed fabric, embroidery, polymer clay, layered felt, and colored wool.

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration

This year, I finally found what I’ve been searching for – a way to share my Lupita artwork in a size and style that will fit nicely on a Christmas tree.  I have both original paintings (photos above) and also art prints for ornaments featuring my more intricate paintings & designs (photos below).

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration
Art Print Ornament

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration

The ornaments are made by coating & sealing my artwork onto small canvas panels, then attaching a ribbon and adding pretty craft paper to the back. The original paintings are on canvas blocks stretched over a wooden frame and the art prints are on flat canvas panels.

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration

I tried to make them in a mix of more traditional Christmas colors of red & green, as well as my Lupita style of bright pink & rainbow colors. They come in two sizes – 3×3 and 2×2 inches square.

Emily Lupita Studio Christmas Tree Ornaments Handmade Artwork Holiday Gift Decoration

Each ornament is handcrafted individually and takes quite awhile to make (especially the ones made from original paintings), so there’s only a limited number of them available this first year. I have a collection of them up in my online art shop and also currently have a small collection at The Local Exchangelocated on the Historic Marietta Square in Marietta, Georgia.

New Turkish Artwork Earrings – 2 Day Reserve Sale

The View from my Art Desk – New Turkish Artwork Earrings – 2 Day Reserve Sale

I just finished a new collection of handmade art earrings and I’ve fallen in love with them. I feel like this is my most beautiful collection yet.

DSC_0694

The designs inside the earrings are amazing Turkish gilded artwork that I found while wondering around inside the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. I matched the different designs up in pairs, then encased the art under glass and fixed them into earrings.

DSC_0704

I want to give my readers first pick of these beauties – if you see one you love, please reserve at this link in my online shop by Monday evening, November 3rd. Once a pair is reserved, I will take it off the list and there will never be another one exactly like it.

Turkish Earrings Choices

The reason for the quick, 2 day only reserve sale is that on Tuesday I’ll be taking the collection of earrings over to the fabulous store, The Local Exchangelocated on the Historic Marietta Square in Marietta, Georgia. The earrings (and my Christmas ornaments & Christmas cards) will will be available for the holiday season there starting with their Holiday Open House this Friday.

DSC_0688

These will be a bit hard to let go of…I may have to give each one a hug goodbye.  (I had a moment where I thought maybe I’d tuck them all away in my own jewelry box.) But what I love the most about making art is being able to share it – and sharing these bright, beautiful Turkish artwork earrings with you is a little dream come true.
