Happy New Year 2014!

Happy New Year from Emily Lupita Studio!

Sending out wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

I love writing New Year resolutions & this year I decided to create a fun poster to display some of them here in my studio.

2014 6 SQUARE

Sharing here the steps to make one of your own…I’d love to see what you create!

New Year Resolutions Poster Project:

#1: Find a picture or photograph that you love. (I used one of my landscape paintings I made of San Cristobal.)

#2: Divide the picture into 9 squares. Fade out the middle square and four of the corner squares.

#3: Write the year in the middle and your resolutions in the corners. Play around with the fonts & colors.

#4: Put up your inspirational poster somewhere you’ll see it every morning and visualize your dreams coming true!

Happiness,

-Emily Lupita

Final Days of my Kickstarter Project

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

The final few days of my Kickstarter project are here! (The project ends on October 31st.)  I’m truly grateful to the 55 amazing people who’ve backed my project so far. I now have 93% of the total pledges needed to fund The Artist’s Alphabet book. Almost there…

P is for Perseverence

This has been one of the busiest weeks here at my studio and also one of the very best. I’ve been enjoying the time I spend each day working on finishing up all the details of the book design. These are two screen shots from my latest layout to give you an idea of how the book will look when finished. (I also shared a few different screen shots on my Emily Lupita Studio Facebook page earlier this week if you’d like to see more.)

Friendship

I added a colorful first letter to the title word on each definition page as well as a fancy text divider underneath to better balance out the spacing . I still have a few more definitions to write because it takes me awhile to think of how I want to phrase each definition & I go through so many drafts for each word.

Kindness

The book cover is coming along nicely. I still need to format it to the printer’s specifications, but this is the latest design I’m working with as of today:

COVER FINAL

It’s hard to believe my Kickstarter project  will end on October 31st, only four days from now. It’s been an incredible journey so far and I’m excited to see where the next four days will take me.

Sending you all many heartfelt thanks for your support & encouragement,

-Emily Lupita

Week 4 of Kickstarter: The Final Week Begins

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Week 4 of my month-long Kickstarter project begins today.  I had 7 wonderful people back my project in the third week and now have 60% of the total pledges needed to fund my art book project.

It has been a joy designing the book pages and receiving such great encouragement & support from my incredible group of backers. I’m still hopeful that the remaining 40% of pledges needed will find their way to my project before October 31st.

Thank You WHITE

I designed this special “Thank You!” card especially for my awesome backers. I have it all prepared to send to the print shop on November 01st, hoping my optimistic actions might somehow help give my project that extra boost of positive energy needed for it to succeed in the final week.

Thanks Inside Postcard

This is another hopeful design I made this week, “A Note of Thanks.” I love how the paintings & letters flow together to create a bright & colorful thank you card. This might be another option for my special backer cards – or perhaps I’ll try to create a combination of the two designs.

I’ve been working on the letters for such a long time – now that they are all finished I’m really enjoying the process of combining them into words & special designs. Here’s another I made as an update to my project page.

Imagine a new alphabet

Thanks for all your encouragement. One more week…

Week 3 of Kickstarter: Poster Design & Definition Pages

BLACK ALPHABET POSTER FINAL 2

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Week 3 of my month-long Kickstarter project has started and a huge thank you goes out to the 11 wonderful people who backed my project in the second week.  I now have 47% of the pledges needed to make the book a reality. But I still need to raise more than half of my funding goal in the next two weeks, so the butterflies in my stomach are growing.

I had a beautiful moment this week when I finally finished the alphabet poster, something I’ve been slowly working toward for years. Each letter represents an original watercolor painting & design process that was a labor of love. The day I finished it also happened to be my 36th birthday, so I felt like this was a good sign I’m on the right path.

WHITE ALPHABET POSTER FINAL 2

The definition pages are slowly emerging – I’m all the way to “hope.” I’m writing my own definitions for each word based on the traditional Oxford Dictionary, but modified with my own feelings & experience with the word. Two of my favorite definition pages so far are Dreamer & Friendship.

Week 2 of Kickstarter & New Designs

WEB BOOK E is for ENCOURAGEMENT 3

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

I’m entering Week 2 of my month-long Kickstarter project here at Emily Lupita Studio. I’m so grateful to the 13 people who backed my project in its first week & to those who’ve shared the project link with others. It’s exciting to see that I have almost 30% of my funding goal, but nerve-wracking to know I have a whole 70% to go in the next 3 weeks in order to make the book a reality.

I’ve been working hard on finalizing the letter designs for the book. I have two new designs – “E” is for Encouragement and “I” is for Imagination. They make me smile!

WEB BOOK I is for Imagination 3

I’ve also started designing the definition pages that will face the letter pages. I made mark ups using a book of the same size to be able to format the layout correctly. Here are the first two pages – a glimpse of what the book will be like when finished.

A B MARK UP

I’m just praying the Kickstarter campaign will be successful so I will be able to send the finished book files to the printer in November.

Thanks for all your encouragement!

New Art Book Project Accepted By Kickstarter!

PostCard 2

New Art Book Project Accepted by Kickstarter:

I’m excited to share with you that my new art book project, The Artist’s Alphabet, has just been approved for a Kickstarter crowdsourcing campaign! A special Kickstarter website will run until October 31, 2013 at 11:59pm Eastern.

The official launch is October 1st, but I wanted to give the wonderful people who read my blog access to the project site early, so I linked it to this post. Just click here or on the invitation photo above to check it out.  (The site is now live & running, and I’m able to accept backer pledges as of today.)

Pledges start at $10 and I’m offering some great rewards for supporters of my project.  These rewards include “Kickstarter Only” packages on copies of the The Artist’s Alphabet e-book & soft cover book, plus, I’m offering big reductions on my original watercolor paintings as a special thank you to backers who’d like to collect a piece of original artwork.

Everyone who supports my project will also receive one of my artwork greeting cards in the mail with a handwritten thank you note inside and will be listed on a special page on my website and/or in the printed book itself to thank you for your generosity.

I’m hoping to raise $3500 to help fund the first edition printing of my alphabet book. To explain a bit about Kickstarter, it’s set up as an “all or nothing” platform, so if I meet my funding goal before the October 31 deadline, I get to put all the money I raise toward my art project (minus about 10% in Kickstarter/Amazon fees). If I fall short of the $3500 mark, I won’t get anything.

Thanks for your support & for helping me spread the word about this exciting project!

[This is the direct link to my Kickstarter site if you’d like to share with family & friends.]

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

This week I finished my Artist’s Alphabet series! I’ve been working on the paintings & pairing them up with the letters to create these designs for years now & it is wonderful to see them all together.

I’m especially excited start collecting these designs into the book I dreamed up all those years ago when I first started sketching The Artist’s Alphabet out in my art journal. I look forward to seeing where this project takes me next!

Wishing you every happiness,

New Painting: “Lupita Aya Sofya”

AyaSofyaMakingOf

New Painting: “Lupita Aya Sofya”

“Lupita Aya Sofya” has been months in the making and it gives me such joy to see it all finished. This painting features three sets of color combinations, more than my usual two, making it extra bright.

I also added a layer of shimmery gold to each color in the robe & halo, and around the flower petals in the background as well. I love how the gold makes the painting sparkle in the light.

This painting was inspired by the mosaics in the Aya Sofya (Hagia Sophia) in Istanbul, Turkey. For more background on the mosaics, check out my blog post from July 30th.

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio: Fireworks

This week I finished a new painting in my Japanese kimono series. This one is called, “Fireworks.”

2-1 Fireworks Kimono

http://emily-lupita-studio.artistwebsites.com/featured/lupita-fireworks-emily-lupita-studio.html

This painting reminds me of the excitement I felt as a little girl in Iowa watching the fireworks on the Fourth of July each year & also of the amazing fireworks I saw at the summer festivals in my adopted hometown of Miyakonojo, Japan.

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio: Lupita Portrait – Ashley in a Green Dress

This week I’ve been working on a special painting in my Lupita Portrait series titled, “Ashley in a Green Dress.” It features my Ashley Lupita, based on my beautiful sister-in-law.
6-1 Portrait Ashley Green Dress

In this painting, Ashley has bright pink wings and wears a brilliant green dress. When I made this painting I was thinking about all the wonderful things Ashley has done for our family, and how she brings her great strength and compassion with her wherever she goes.

August 18 2013_1

I’ve been enjoying adding various backgrounds to this painting for different effects. Here are a few different versions. I am thinking this series would make cool greeting cards someday.

Happiness,

-Emily Lupita

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio: Artistic Inspiration

2-1 Pearl Earring

Artistic inspiration comes in many forms. This past weekend I went to see the Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer at the Atlanta High Museum of Art. I loved being back in the art museum, surrounded by beauty in all its many forms. When I got home, I was looking at the museum’s website and found their “Go Girl” gallery. It offers a chance to be “part of the exhibit” by adding yourself to their online gallery – complete with Vermeer’s famous pearl earring and headscarf.
Lupita with a Pearl Earring
I found this hilarious and, of course, submitted my own photo right away, not wanting to miss out on this once in a lifetime experience to laugh at myself dressed as a famous painting. I showed the picture to my husband and he thought it was great. He suggested that I try to paint my own Lupita version of the famous painting, based on this silly photo. I wasn’t so sure…but he kept encouraging me. So, I played around with it, trying all sorts of new things…and eventually this new painting emerged.

2-1 Pearl Earring

http://emily-lupita-studio.artistwebsites.com/featured/lupita-with-a-pearl-earring-emily-lupita-studio.html

I was delighted – most of all because I had such a good time doing it – I was like a little kid again with my paints designing away on a rainy day. But also because it felt like I was trying something new and I got to grow a bit as an artist. Once I got over the initial fear of making a mistake (the first couple versions I painted I had to throw away), I just really enjoyed creating & exploring the space on my art board. Then once the painting was finished, I had fun pairing it with a couple different paper backgrounds in purple.

My previous visit to the art museum was in May with my mother and a group of close friends to see the Frida & Diego exhibit, which was just beyond stunning & still stays with me to this day. I’m hoping one of these days another wave of inspiration will roll in from that experience…can’t wait to see where the tides will take me next.

What inspires you to create? Are there specific places you go to soak up the creative spirit?

Happiness,

-Emily Lupita

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio: Girl with a Pearl Earring

IMG_2324 - Version 2This week I went to the High Museum of Art in downtown Atlanta. They had a special event of Friday night jazz & viewing of the fabulous Girl with a Pearl Earring painting by Vermeer. My husband, Alper, and I went with our amazing friends, Diana & Selim, and just had the best time.

The Girl with a Pearl Earring painting was stunning. It has been recently restored and the paint glistened through the centuries. I loved it and could have stayed standing there, face-to-face in front of it all night.

IMG_2334

Alper found this cool coloring book in the gift shop and decided I just had to have it. Inside are 52 coloring plates of famous paintings with 10 facts about each painting pointed out on the page so you can learn more about how the master painter created it. It is hard to explain, so I’ve included a page here.

IMG_2336

This exhibit inspired me in so many ways. I loved the many paintings, including some by Rembrandt, and how the paint still had its brilliant shine after so many years. It reminded me of the quote, “Art is what endures.”  I feel so grateful to have had the chance to see these masterpieces painted so long ago, enduring the journey through time and space all the way from their original home in Holland to the museum where we stood to gaze at them last night.

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio: One Month Blogiversary & Aya Sofya Painting

Thank You!

Today I’m celebrating the one month anniversary of my new Emily Lupita Studio blog. Sending out a special Thank You! to everyone who has visited, followed, and/or left a comment during my first month. I’ve so enjoyed getting it all set up and writing a little each day about my artwork and travels. I’m happy to have met my start up goal of a full month of daily posts, and hope to keep up with my long-term goal of at least weekly updates from here on out.

IMG_2190

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio:

This week I’ve been continuing my work on my new Aya Sofya painting and I have everything done now except the background on the original.  I have just this morning decided on a turquoise blue background with purple flowers and should finish soon now that I am (happily and gratefully) returned to my peaceful daily life back in the studio.

I’ll post the final painting in my Artwork Gallery when finished. I also like to keep a version of the painting with a white background, as well as choose a paper background for my portrait paintings. For this design I decided on a cool paper with swirls in purple and gold. This means for each painting, there may end up being three or four design versions.

Aya Sofya Lupita Post

You can see the details of the two versions (above) that I’ve already finished in my Artwork Gallery here:

Q & A: Where Do You Paint?

DSC_0054

Where do you paint?

My favorite place to paint is next to the window in my studio room in the mornings.  I play uplifting music, open the windows, make a nice tea, and spend some quality time with my colors to start my day. My dogs love it, too, and sit at my feet or up on the arm of the sofa to watch me paint.

DSC_0208

Sometimes I enjoy going outside to sit on my rose garden bench to paint. I like to watch the world going by and it is always a good way to meet new neighbors. My mom and I are planning to go to the Botanical Garden to paint the next time she comes for a visit. Can’t wait!

Where do you like to paint? Do you ever go to coffee shops or parks or mountain tops to be inspired?

Happiness,

-Emily Lupita

Travelogue Thursday: Once You Have Traveled

DSC_0040

“Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quiestest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey.” -Pat Conroy

This quote really struck me the first time I read it. I imagine I’ve read it again a hundred times since then. I find it so true that the journey continues in the mind, that the voyage never ends. I know for myself, the travels I’ve taken influence me to such a high degree – on all different levels throughout my day. While cooking I can be reminded of the smell of a noodle house in Japan or out on a walk around my neighborhood I can pause to find myself remembering the view from the top of Mt. Snowdon in Wales.

DSC_0029-2

This is one reason why I like to keep little treasures from my travels in my studio. I have bird whistles from Nicaragua next to my candles on the mantle, a painted wooden mirror frame from Ecuador on the wall behind my paintings desk, and Mexican flower pots in my garden. I keep my drawing pens in a pottery container from Merida and use paints from Japan. I put flowers in a Turkish vase on my dining room table in front of a collection of tiles I bargained for in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.  The purple chair covers are handwoven textiles from Chiapas.

DSC_0079-2

These small pieces I tucked away and carried home with me help fill my everyday life with the colors, textures and memories of the larger world.

What types of special things do you keep in your studio / creative place? What beautiful places do they remind you of?

Happiness,

-Emily Lupita
