My “Writers Write” Series Interview

This Week At Emily Lupita Studio – My “Writers Write” Series Interview:

I’m delighted to have been interviewed by AndiLit.com about my creative process and new book as part of the “Writers Write” interview series hosted by AndiLit founder, Andi Cumbo-Floyd. I answer 10 questions ranging from thoughts on building a platform for writing to how books influenced my childhood.

I’m re-posting the first section of the interview here and it appears in full at this link.

Treasure This Sacred Space – A Writers Write Interview with Emily Lupita

I absolutely love creative people who throw their creative energy into the work of other artists, and Emily Lupita is one of those people.  Please take a few minutes and enjoy her words and wisdom today.

1. Tell me about your latest project.  The Artist's Alphabet by Emily Lupita

The Artist’s Alphabet: 26 Words to Encourage Creativity is a hybrid project that brought my love of painting and words together. It combines a collection of my “Lupita on a Journey” paintings with a painting I made of each letter of the alphabet. All the letters are connected to a word that I felt encourages creativity or represents an important aspect of the creative lifestyle. On the facing page of each painting / letter / word combo is the word’s definition, which I edited to better fit my idea of what each word means to me as an artist and writer. I designed it as a tool for children learning to read, but I also hope it can serve as a sort of colorful sanctuary for adults, a place where they can go to embrace the powerful versatility of a joyful child’s creative mindset.

The book is dedicated to my mother, artist Juana Maria Plum, and starts with a design I made of a favorite quote, “All the arts we practice are apprenticeship. The big art is our life” by M.C. Richards.

Signed copies are available in my art shop at http://www.EmilyLupitaStudio.com and unsigned copies on Amazon.

2. What role, if any, did books, writing, and reading play in your childhood?

Books, reading, and writing were central elements of my childhood. My parents, two brothers and I lived on a self-sustaining homestead in the countryside of rural Iowa. We didn’t have running water until I was seventeen and had almost no modern electronic conveniences, so our collective imaginations were the most exciting thing around and that’s were we spent most of our time. We read books, put on plays in the living room, and went on narrated walks into the wild landscape that surrounded us. My mother is an artist and we had a special long, rectangular table dedicated to painting and to all sorts of craft projects from making our own fishing lures to chiseling animal figurines out of wood. My father is a bardic poet who recites long stretches of oral poetry from memory, and some of my earliest childhood memories are of him teaching me to memorize lines from his poems by repeating them in rhythmic patterns while waving my hands like a conductor before an orchestra. When the two of them got together on a creative roll, it was a true wonder for their three children to behold and, still, I go back to those moments of wonder when I’m on the verge of creating something new.

W is for Wonder

3. What is your writing practice, your writing routine?

In the mornings I wake up early and sort of stumble downstairs to my art studio. I like this because it feels like I actually wake up painting. Once I’m through the mist and fully awake, I spend time working on my memoir manuscript, The Poet’s Daughter, for about an hour. It is a slow process that I’ve come to enjoy – etching away at it line by line for years. Each night I do a writing exercise where I open my Artist’s Alphabet book to a random page and write about how I want to manifest more of that particular word in my life. Some of my favorite words that keep appearing to me are gratitude, imagination, perseverance, and wonder.G is for Gratitude

4. Who are you reading now?

Right now I’m reading The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. Love, love, love. I’m also reading her Facebook page posts, which are excellent and seem to arrive just when I need the bursts of encouragement and words of wisdom.

5. What are three of your all-time favorite books? Why do you love those?

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

This book was one my parents used to read to my brothers and me as children. I love the illustrations and how the timeless story speaks to readers of all ages. The Spanish version, El Principito, was the first book I ever read in Spanish, my mother’s native tongue, and opened up her world of language to me in a whole new way.

Dubious Angels: Poems After Paul Klee by Keith Ratzlaff (Anhinga Press, 2005)

In this beautiful book of poems, Ratzlaff writes stunning lines as a reflection of the angel artwork Paul Klee drew during the 18 months leading up to his death. Ratzlaff gives a voice to these angels and the combination of art and poetry together on the page is inspiring. I come back to this book over and over when I want to contemplate the larger questions, as Ratzlaff writes after Paul Klee’s drawing “Last Earthly Step,”

For we are a dream of instability

For we are a drama of horizontals

How we last and are last

How our hair goes disguised as a shroud in the little wind

Relics: Deep Mythic Image Poetry by Joseph S. Plum (Dreaming Deer Press, 2013)

As a child, I listened to my father recite his bardic poetry from memory and as I grew older, I would try to remember the lines myself and then run to my room to write them down so they were not lost forever in the forest of his mind. After decades of trying to convince him of the value of his art and how important it was (to me and many others) that his poems be preserved in the written form, my father finally agreed to let me type them out. This process took years and consisted of him saying the poems aloud in a trance-like state as I recorded him during different visits to my home studio. I then transcribed the recordings and went about editing the hours of transcriptions into lines of poetry. The final result is a manuscript of many hundreds of pages, with more added each year as my father continues his annual visits and recordings.

Relics: Deep Mythic Image Poetry is the first book created from this massive manuscript. Because his genre exists so far outside the modern arch of poetry, I created my own press, Dreaming Deer Press, in order to publish it. I have since published three books and have four more of his books in different stages of the editing process on my desk. These poetry books are the culmination of a lifetime of effort to record and document my father’s gift, and symbolize to me the power of perseverance and the mysterious bonds of love between a daughter and her father.

Art Under Glass

This Week @ Emily Lupita Studio

It has been an exciting week here in the studio with the launch of my new Art Under Glass jewelry line. The collection is off to a great start with 30 colorful pieces of art encased under glass and set in pendants of different shapes & sizes.

Art Under Glass Main Photo

My sister-in-law and niece were amazing and helped me to get started on this big project when they came to visit several months ago. I’ve been working on finishing this first batch of the collection since then and each finished piece is so special to me. I feel like I’m just getting started with this new miniature art form.

DSC_0020DSC_0024

How It’s Made:

The process for making these little wonders begins with creating a digital image of my original watercolor painting that fits the size of the pendant. Then I print the image, cut it to the proper shape, wax it and bind the glass to the top with a transparent fixing agent, making sure the glass doesn’t slide around by holding it in place until it sets. After this dries for a day, I wax the back of the image, coat it with fixing agent and set it in the metal pendant base coated with a thin layer of metal glue. After the finished pendant dries for 2 days…Voilà!the art jewelry is ready to wear.

DSC_0041DSC_0062

Coming Soon:

I was so happy to be asked to make a custom pair of earrings using this same Art Under Glass technique to match a friend’s favorite painting in my Artist’s Alphabet book. Such a wonderful idea! After several tries I found the best design to fit the space and just loved seeing the book pages transform into earrings. It was a fun project and I was inspired to keep on making a series of alphabet earrings…coming soon.

Happy New Year 2014!

Happy New Year from Emily Lupita Studio!

Sending out wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

I love writing New Year resolutions & this year I decided to create a fun poster to display some of them here in my studio.

2014 6 SQUARE

Sharing here the steps to make one of your own…I’d love to see what you create!

New Year Resolutions Poster Project:

#1: Find a picture or photograph that you love. (I used one of my landscape paintings I made of San Cristobal.)

#2: Divide the picture into 9 squares. Fade out the middle square and four of the corner squares.

#3: Write the year in the middle and your resolutions in the corners. Play around with the fonts & colors.

#4: Put up your inspirational poster somewhere you’ll see it every morning and visualize your dreams coming true!

Happiness,

Happy Thanksgiving!

This Week @ Emily Lupita Studio:

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all had a nice holiday weekend.

My family came to visit this week and we had such a nice time together. I’m blessed with a very creative family and we did so many cool projects together.

I loved waking up in the morning to paint with my brother & niece.

My sister-in-law & niece helped me make my new line of artwork jewelry…almost 100 new pieces!

We stayed up late talking & creating all sorts of pretty things.

My mom is really talented at sewing and she’s helping me create a prototype for my new Lupita dolls.

DSC_0025

So many great ideas…we’re still working on the final design but it has been fun experimenting with color, size & texture. Here are a few of our first dolls. My mom made the pink one – my favorite.

The Book Proof is Here!

This Week @ Emily Lupita Studio:

What an amazing feeling to finally hold the book in my hands! The proof arrived this week and my dog, Mavi, and I read it for the first time together.

The proof looked great & the book order has gone in. The shipment is scheduled to arrive in two weeks…can’t wait!

Reading First ProofI found a cool set of alphabet stamps this week just in time to add to the back of most of my thank you cards. I had a great time stamping the initials of my backers on each envelope.

I also finished the first of my original alphabet paintings. I love how the bright colors make the letter drawings come alive. Here are a few photos from my studio desk of my two most recent paintings- Kindness & Wonder.

I was so happy to receive the special “Thank You!” cards I designed this week. I’m really pleased with how they turned out and find myself picking them up over & over and smiling. Now that the cards are here, I’ve started writing my thank you notes to each of my 75 Kickstarter backers. I’ve enjoyed spending time with each note & thinking about each individual person as I write to thank them. I hope my backers love their cards!

I’ve also been continuing my work on the original alphabet paintings. I’ve finished drawing a few more of the canvases – Friendship and Gratitude.

This Week: Book Cover & First Alphabet Painting

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio:

This is the first week after the Kickstarter for my book project ended and it has been a wonderful, busy time. I’ve spent many hours designing and finalizing the final cover layout.

Final Book Cover Layout

The book is being distributed by Amazon.com, so I also needed to write the book description and author bio to go on Amazon’s webpage once the book is ready. It will look something like this:

Screenshot from Amazon book description page

I’m learning about distribution channels, copyright, royalty tiers, accounting and many other new things associated with having a small business & becoming my own publisher. It’s a ton of new information (some of it rather challenging for me to fully understand)…but I actually really love it so far.

“I is for Imagination” by Emily Lupita (ink drawing)

I finished drawing the first of my custom alphabet original paintings for my Kickstarter art collectors this week as well. I’ll start adding the watercolor soon & am excited to see “I is for Imagination” spring to life.

It is amazing for me to see this project come full circle…from creating the paintings over the last ten years to dreaming up the alphabet designs to laying out the text & graphic designs in the book and now this morning hand drawing the book designs here on watercolor paper.

When I reflect back on the journey I am filled with gratitude.

Sending wishes for a beautiful week ahead,

Final Days of my Kickstarter Project

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

The final few days of my Kickstarter project are here! (The project ends on October 31st.)  I’m truly grateful to the 55 amazing people who’ve backed my project so far. I now have 93% of the total pledges needed to fund The Artist’s Alphabet book. Almost there…

P is for Perseverence

This has been one of the busiest weeks here at my studio and also one of the very best. I’ve been enjoying the time I spend each day working on finishing up all the details of the book design. These are two screen shots from my latest layout to give you an idea of how the book will look when finished. (I also shared a few different screen shots on my Emily Lupita Studio Facebook page earlier this week if you’d like to see more.)

Friendship

I added a colorful first letter to the title word on each definition page as well as a fancy text divider underneath to better balance out the spacing . I still have a few more definitions to write because it takes me awhile to think of how I want to phrase each definition & I go through so many drafts for each word.

Kindness

The book cover is coming along nicely. I still need to format it to the printer’s specifications, but this is the latest design I’m working with as of today:

COVER FINAL

It’s hard to believe my Kickstarter project  will end on October 31st, only four days from now. It’s been an incredible journey so far and I’m excited to see where the next four days will take me.

Sending you all many heartfelt thanks for your support & encouragement,

-Emily Lupita

Week 4 of Kickstarter: The Final Week Begins

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Week 4 of my month-long Kickstarter project begins today.  I had 7 wonderful people back my project in the third week and now have 60% of the total pledges needed to fund my art book project.

It has been a joy designing the book pages and receiving such great encouragement & support from my incredible group of backers. I’m still hopeful that the remaining 40% of pledges needed will find their way to my project before October 31st.

Thank You WHITE

I designed this special “Thank You!” card especially for my awesome backers. I have it all prepared to send to the print shop on November 01st, hoping my optimistic actions might somehow help give my project that extra boost of positive energy needed for it to succeed in the final week.

Thanks Inside Postcard

This is another hopeful design I made this week, “A Note of Thanks.” I love how the paintings & letters flow together to create a bright & colorful thank you card. This might be another option for my special backer cards – or perhaps I’ll try to create a combination of the two designs.

I’ve been working on the letters for such a long time – now that they are all finished I’m really enjoying the process of combining them into words & special designs. Here’s another I made as an update to my project page.

Imagine a new alphabet

Thanks for all your encouragement. One more week…

Week 3 of Kickstarter: Poster Design & Definition Pages

BLACK ALPHABET POSTER FINAL 2

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Week 3 of my month-long Kickstarter project has started and a huge thank you goes out to the 11 wonderful people who backed my project in the second week.  I now have 47% of the pledges needed to make the book a reality. But I still need to raise more than half of my funding goal in the next two weeks, so the butterflies in my stomach are growing.

I had a beautiful moment this week when I finally finished the alphabet poster, something I’ve been slowly working toward for years. Each letter represents an original watercolor painting & design process that was a labor of love. The day I finished it also happened to be my 36th birthday, so I felt like this was a good sign I’m on the right path.

WHITE ALPHABET POSTER FINAL 2

The definition pages are slowly emerging – I’m all the way to “hope.” I’m writing my own definitions for each word based on the traditional Oxford Dictionary, but modified with my own feelings & experience with the word. Two of my favorite definition pages so far are Dreamer & Friendship.

DREAMER Definition Page

Thanks for all your encouragement!

New Art Book Project Accepted By Kickstarter!

PostCard 2

New Art Book Project Accepted by Kickstarter:

I’m excited to share with you that my new art book project, The Artist’s Alphabet, has just been approved for a Kickstarter crowdsourcing campaign! A special Kickstarter website will run until October 31, 2013 at 11:59pm Eastern.

The official launch is October 1st, but I wanted to give the wonderful people who read my blog access to the project site early, so I linked it to this post. Just click here or on the invitation photo above to check it out.  (The site is now live & running, and I’m able to accept backer pledges as of today.)

Pledges start at $10 and I’m offering some great rewards for supporters of my project.  These rewards include “Kickstarter Only” packages on copies of the The Artist’s Alphabet e-book & soft cover book, plus, I’m offering big reductions on my original watercolor paintings as a special thank you to backers who’d like to collect a piece of original artwork.

Everyone who supports my project will also receive one of my artwork greeting cards in the mail with a handwritten thank you note inside and will be listed on a special page on my website and/or in the printed book itself to thank you for your generosity.

I’m hoping to raise $3500 to help fund the first edition printing of my alphabet book. To explain a bit about Kickstarter, it’s set up as an “all or nothing” platform, so if I meet my funding goal before the October 31 deadline, I get to put all the money I raise toward my art project (minus about 10% in Kickstarter/Amazon fees). If I fall short of the $3500 mark, I won’t get anything.

Thanks for your support & for helping me spread the word about this exciting project!

[This is the direct link to my Kickstarter site if you’d like to share with family & friends.]

This Week: Finished the Alphabet

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

This week I finished my Artist’s Alphabet series! I’ve been working on the paintings & pairing them up with the letters to create these designs for years now & it is wonderful to see them all together.

I’m especially excited start collecting these designs into the book I dreamed up all those years ago when I first started sketching The Artist’s Alphabet out in my art journal. I look forward to seeing where this project takes me next!

Wishing you every happiness,

-Emily Lupita

This Week: All the Way to “Wonder”

WEB BOOK W is for Wonder

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

This week at Emily Lupita Studio I’m finishing up my designs for my new book, The Artist’s Alphabet. I’ve made it all the way to “W” is for Wonder.

This book has been almost a decade in the making & it truly is wonderful to see all the paintings merging with the letter designs. The whole thing is really coming together…I’m excited!

Wishing you every happiness,

-Emily Lupita
