First 10 Paintings – Wild Plums Book

This is a big day for me. I’ve finally finished the first 10 paintings for my new book. Wow – it was a fun journey to get this far. Only 10 more to go for my full set of 20 paintings.

About the series:

My new artwork series is a meditation on my childhood growing up off-the-grid in rural Iowa. My goal is to write a children’s book using this series of 20 paintings as the illustrations for the book. Thank you to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation – BeWildReWild – Community Artist Grant for your generous support of my project.

Blessings,

Des Moines Botanical Garden

This is one of my favorites! It’s a beautiful memory I have of going to the Des Moines Botanical Garden when I was little. We didn’t go very many places, so this was a real treat.

The big glass dome filled with incredible plants and flowers was like a wonderland. I think part of my desire to travel the world came from reading the descriptions of the plants here and wanting to go see them in the wild.

Third Painting In-Progress: “Painting at the Table”

My series continues with the third painting now in-progress. It started as a sketch from my memory of using my mom’s art supplies to paint at our big table in the dining room.

Then I made several new sketches and came up with the final dimensions.

Here I’m adding in my Lupita character at the table and adding in color. These are all sketches I use as guides to then make the final painting.

Art Grant for New Book Project

It’s an exciting day! I’ve received a Community Art Gathering Grant from the BeWildReWild Fund at the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The grant is to create my newest children’s book – about growing up off the grid in rural Iowa. I’m filled with gratitude to have this opportunity.

The book will have a series of twenty watercolor paintings. Here I am with the very first drawing, all ready to paint. This one is, “Lupita Canning Corn.” These are the largest paintings I’ve ever made, by far. (The new paintings are 12×12 inches and I usually make 5×7 size.)

I’ve also added a new element to the Lupita paintings…a background. I’m experimenting with gauche paint for the background work. It’s challenging and exciting, both.

My favorite part of painting again is sharing the experience with my sons. The Captain is fascinated by Mama painting and joins me at the table to watch what I’m up to.

I’ll post updates on my new project here on my blog and also on my Emily Lupita Studio Facebook Page.

Thank you to the Iowa Natural Heritage Fund for supporting my work!

Blessings,

Emily Lupita

New Painting – Lupita and Her Captain 2.0

My newest painting is modeled after a photograph of me holding my son, Charlie. These are a few of the steps I went through to create the painting. I used an Apple Pencil and the software called Procreate. It’s very calming and relaxing for me to paint this way. I love playing with color and texture, with the different layers upon layers.

Blessings,

New Lupita Painting – The first in about a year

Lupita

✨ Life is a mystery. People we love get sick and we are overwhelmed with sorrow. Then there are these beautiful moments of joy…where the gorgeous sunrise awakens our spirit and the waves bring us beautiful shells to hold in our hands. We each have our own way of expressing and exploring this duality of life…through dance, music, sculpture, mathematics, song, art…and many other ways. ✨

✨ It’s been so long since I’ve painted in any dedicated way, but when my spirit is looking to express itself, somehow I always find my way back to my Lupita paintings. It’s how I explore life in all it’s mystery. When there are no answers, I paint and create my own answers…perhaps?✨

✨This is the first in a new series. Same Lupita spirit. Same watercolor & ink. A new perspective. ✨

Love & Blessings,

Emily Lupita
