Happy New Year 2014!

Happy New Year from Emily Lupita Studio!

Sending out wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

I love writing New Year resolutions & this year I decided to create a fun poster to display some of them here in my studio.

2014 6 SQUARE

Sharing here the steps to make one of your own…I’d love to see what you create!

New Year Resolutions Poster Project:

#1: Find a picture or photograph that you love. (I used one of my landscape paintings I made of San Cristobal.)

#2: Divide the picture into 9 squares. Fade out the middle square and four of the corner squares.

#3: Write the year in the middle and your resolutions in the corners. Play around with the fonts & colors.

#4: Put up your inspirational poster somewhere you’ll see it every morning and visualize your dreams coming true!

Happiness,

-Emily Lupita

This Week: Book Pre-Order & Thank You Cards & Alphabet Drawings

This Week @ Emily Lupita Studio:

I’m excited to share that the pre-order listing for The Artist’s Alphabet book is now up in my Etsy Shop. This is cool because if you’d like a copy, you can order it now online and as soon as the books arrive at my studio I’ll ship one out to you. I’ll sign each pre-order copy and will also be happy to dedicate the book to someone special, just let me know who in the “notes to seller” section at checkout.

This is the link:    www.etsy.com/listing/169174662/book-pre-order-the-artists-alphabet-26

The book will also be available on Amazon.com in December, but anything ordered directly from Amazon won’t be signed or dedicated since the books ship out directly from the warehouse and won’t pass through my hands.

I was so happy to receive the special “Thank You!” cards I designed this week. I’m really pleased with how they turned out and find myself picking them up over & over and smiling. Now that the cards are here, I’ve started writing my thank you notes to each of my 75 Kickstarter backers. I’ve enjoyed spending time with each note & thinking about each individual person as I write to thank them. I hope my backers love their cards!

I’ve also been continuing my work on the original alphabet paintings. I’ve finished drawing a few more of the canvases – Friendship and Gratitude.

Sending wishes for a beautiful week ahead,

-Emily Lupita

Final Days of my Kickstarter Project

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

The final few days of my Kickstarter project are here! (The project ends on October 31st.)  I’m truly grateful to the 55 amazing people who’ve backed my project so far. I now have 93% of the total pledges needed to fund The Artist’s Alphabet book. Almost there…

P is for Perseverence

This has been one of the busiest weeks here at my studio and also one of the very best. I’ve been enjoying the time I spend each day working on finishing up all the details of the book design. These are two screen shots from my latest layout to give you an idea of how the book will look when finished. (I also shared a few different screen shots on my Emily Lupita Studio Facebook page earlier this week if you’d like to see more.)

Friendship

I added a colorful first letter to the title word on each definition page as well as a fancy text divider underneath to better balance out the spacing . I still have a few more definitions to write because it takes me awhile to think of how I want to phrase each definition & I go through so many drafts for each word.

Kindness

The book cover is coming along nicely. I still need to format it to the printer’s specifications, but this is the latest design I’m working with as of today:

COVER FINAL

It’s hard to believe my Kickstarter project  will end on October 31st, only four days from now. It’s been an incredible journey so far and I’m excited to see where the next four days will take me.

Sending you all many heartfelt thanks for your support & encouragement,

-Emily Lupita

Week 4 of Kickstarter: The Final Week Begins

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Week 4 of my month-long Kickstarter project begins today.  I had 7 wonderful people back my project in the third week and now have 60% of the total pledges needed to fund my art book project.

It has been a joy designing the book pages and receiving such great encouragement & support from my incredible group of backers. I’m still hopeful that the remaining 40% of pledges needed will find their way to my project before October 31st.

Thank You WHITE

I designed this special “Thank You!” card especially for my awesome backers. I have it all prepared to send to the print shop on November 01st, hoping my optimistic actions might somehow help give my project that extra boost of positive energy needed for it to succeed in the final week.

Thanks Inside Postcard

This is another hopeful design I made this week, “A Note of Thanks.” I love how the paintings & letters flow together to create a bright & colorful thank you card. This might be another option for my special backer cards – or perhaps I’ll try to create a combination of the two designs.

I’ve been working on the letters for such a long time – now that they are all finished I’m really enjoying the process of combining them into words & special designs. Here’s another I made as an update to my project page.

Imagine a new alphabet

Thanks for all your encouragement. One more week…

Week 3 of Kickstarter: Poster Design & Definition Pages

BLACK ALPHABET POSTER FINAL 2

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Week 3 of my month-long Kickstarter project has started and a huge thank you goes out to the 11 wonderful people who backed my project in the second week.  I now have 47% of the pledges needed to make the book a reality. But I still need to raise more than half of my funding goal in the next two weeks, so the butterflies in my stomach are growing.

I had a beautiful moment this week when I finally finished the alphabet poster, something I’ve been slowly working toward for years. Each letter represents an original watercolor painting & design process that was a labor of love. The day I finished it also happened to be my 36th birthday, so I felt like this was a good sign I’m on the right path.

WHITE ALPHABET POSTER FINAL 2

The definition pages are slowly emerging – I’m all the way to “hope.” I’m writing my own definitions for each word based on the traditional Oxford Dictionary, but modified with my own feelings & experience with the word. Two of my favorite definition pages so far are Dreamer & Friendship.

Week 2 of Kickstarter & New Designs

WEB BOOK E is for ENCOURAGEMENT 3

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

I’m entering Week 2 of my month-long Kickstarter project here at Emily Lupita Studio. I’m so grateful to the 13 people who backed my project in its first week & to those who’ve shared the project link with others. It’s exciting to see that I have almost 30% of my funding goal, but nerve-wracking to know I have a whole 70% to go in the next 3 weeks in order to make the book a reality.

I’ve been working hard on finalizing the letter designs for the book. I have two new designs – “E” is for Encouragement and “I” is for Imagination. They make me smile!

WEB BOOK I is for Imagination 3

I’ve also started designing the definition pages that will face the letter pages. I made mark ups using a book of the same size to be able to format the layout correctly. Here are the first two pages – a glimpse of what the book will be like when finished.

A B MARK UP

I’m just praying the Kickstarter campaign will be successful so I will be able to send the finished book files to the printer in November.

Thanks for all your encouragement!

New Art Book Project Accepted By Kickstarter!

PostCard 2

New Art Book Project Accepted by Kickstarter:

I’m excited to share with you that my new art book project, The Artist’s Alphabet, has just been approved for a Kickstarter crowdsourcing campaign! A special Kickstarter website will run until October 31, 2013 at 11:59pm Eastern.

The official launch is October 1st, but I wanted to give the wonderful people who read my blog access to the project site early, so I linked it to this post. Just click here or on the invitation photo above to check it out.  (The site is now live & running, and I’m able to accept backer pledges as of today.)

Pledges start at $10 and I’m offering some great rewards for supporters of my project.  These rewards include “Kickstarter Only” packages on copies of the The Artist’s Alphabet e-book & soft cover book, plus, I’m offering big reductions on my original watercolor paintings as a special thank you to backers who’d like to collect a piece of original artwork.

Everyone who supports my project will also receive one of my artwork greeting cards in the mail with a handwritten thank you note inside and will be listed on a special page on my website and/or in the printed book itself to thank you for your generosity.

I’m hoping to raise $3500 to help fund the first edition printing of my alphabet book. To explain a bit about Kickstarter, it’s set up as an “all or nothing” platform, so if I meet my funding goal before the October 31 deadline, I get to put all the money I raise toward my art project (minus about 10% in Kickstarter/Amazon fees). If I fall short of the $3500 mark, I won’t get anything.

Thanks for your support & for helping me spread the word about this exciting project!

[This is the direct link to my Kickstarter site if you’d like to share with family & friends.]

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio

This week I finished my Artist’s Alphabet series! I’ve been working on the paintings & pairing them up with the letters to create these designs for years now & it is wonderful to see them all together.

I’m especially excited start collecting these designs into the book I dreamed up all those years ago when I first started sketching The Artist’s Alphabet out in my art journal. I look forward to seeing where this project takes me next!

Wishing you every happiness,

This Week at Emily Lupita Studio: Girl with a Pearl Earring

IMG_2324 - Version 2This week I went to the High Museum of Art in downtown Atlanta. They had a special event of Friday night jazz & viewing of the fabulous Girl with a Pearl Earring painting by Vermeer. My husband, Alper, and I went with our amazing friends, Diana & Selim, and just had the best time.

The Girl with a Pearl Earring painting was stunning. It has been recently restored and the paint glistened through the centuries. I loved it and could have stayed standing there, face-to-face in front of it all night.

IMG_2334

Alper found this cool coloring book in the gift shop and decided I just had to have it. Inside are 52 coloring plates of famous paintings with 10 facts about each painting pointed out on the page so you can learn more about how the master painter created it. It is hard to explain, so I’ve included a page here.

IMG_2336

This exhibit inspired me in so many ways. I loved the many paintings, including some by Rembrandt, and how the paint still had its brilliant shine after so many years. It reminded me of the quote, “Art is what endures.”  I feel so grateful to have had the chance to see these masterpieces painted so long ago, enduring the journey through time and space all the way from their original home in Holland to the museum where we stood to gaze at them last night.

Peony by Juana Maria

5-1 MOM Peony

This beautiful peony painting is by my mother, Juana Maria Plum. It is part of a series she is working on now where she creates flowers on watercolor cards and sends them off in the mail to brighten people’s day. This one arrived and brought so much light into my house!

I love the sturdy stem & leaves contrasted with the freedom of the pink flower, just flowing freely up & outward toward the sky.

Happiness,

New Gallery & Artwork Shop

OnlineShop6

I have a new online gallery…hurray!

Creating it has been a true labor of love for some time now, so I’m delighted to see it this morning fully up and running. There are still several paintings and a few collections I need to add to it, but I’m excited with how it has turned out so far. I especially love how I can group the paintings into different collections, as well as have one collection showing all paintings together.

IMG_2176

This gallery also serves as my new artwork shop. I’ve partnered with Fine Art America, the premiere artist support company online, to do all the printing. Because they have such a wide network, orders can be placed & shipped world-wide and products include professional artist prints in a range of paper (like watercolor, rag & velvet), prints on canvas, metal & acrylic, greeting cards and even artwork prints on iphone cases. (I’m especially excited about getting a new iphone case with my artwork on it!)IMG_2212

They also offer a wide range of framing & matting options in a variety of sizes, so you can customize the painting to fit where it will hang. The best thing is they have full customer service for buyers and a money back guarantee on all products. I’m so very grateful for their partnership with all of this amazing support and look forward to the places this new path will take me.

I’d love for you to visit the new gallery & post a comment below.

Weekly Gratitude: The Artist’s Alphabet: G is for Gratitude

Post July 30I’ve paired my Artist Alphabet “G is for Gratitude” design with this quote I love that I think does justice to the definition of gratitude: “Gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” – G.K. Chesterton

What is your definition of gratitude? Do you have any great gratitude quotes you’d like to share?

Travelogue Thursday: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Travelogue Thursday August 01 MEXICO

This week as I reflect back on my travels, I am so grateful for a very special journey I took with my mother to her hometown of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. We went there to visit my mother’s sister, my Tia Mago, and her brother, my Tio Lito. It was such a pleasure to witness my mother laughing & talking for hours over good food with her brother & sister. She hadn’t seen them in so many years, but they seemed to just pick up right where they left off. I also got to spend time with my cousins & their families on this journey, meeting many of them for the first time, and really cherish the days we spent together.

I especially love this photo of the three siblings at a candy vendor just as they discover their favorite sweet treat from childhood. “Dad used to make this!” they all three said, pointing to the pile of candy at the same time. “Remember?” And they started to share memories of my grandfather making candy in big copper pots. My Tia Mago placed a piece in my hand and said, “And now you can share this memory, too.” What a beautiful moment.

Not too long after we visited, my Tio Lito passed away, may he rest in peace. My mother told me that when she heard the news of his passing, she was overwhelmed with gratitude that we were able to go and visit, that she had these precious days to remember and photos of us together to treasure. I felt the same way.

This journey to Mexico remains as one of the most heartfelt trips I’ve ever taken. From it I am reminded that travel can give us the greatest gift of all…time together with the people we love.

Painting: Lupezilla The Broken Hearted Monster

5-1 Lupita Monsters Broken Hearted Monster Blue

I’d like to introduce you to my Lupita Monsters series. This character’s name is Lupezilla  and she represents the fun, exciting & emotional side of Lupita.  The sentiment of this painting is, “Even though she is broken hearted, Lupezilla still insists on singing.”

I was inspired to start painting Lupezilla after spending some time in Xalapa and Oaxaca, Mexico. The amazing artisans of these regions make beautiful, colorful wooden (and sometimes paper maché) figures which are commonly known as alebrijes or figuras. An example is shown below.

alebrijes

I fell in love with the style of the alebrijes and began painting my own vision of them, which eventually manifested in Lupezilla and her two dogs, Mavizilla (miniature dachshund monster) & Yunazilla (Boston terrier monster).

Special thanks to my Aunt Martha for encouraging me to show some of my monsters!

Travelogue Thursday: Ecuador

Travelogue Thursday July 25 copy

This Thursday as I think back on my world travels, I am reminded of my adventure in the cloud forests of Ecuador. This pristine natural area is beyond beautiful with its magnificent giant trees and bright pink & purple flowers. On our way to an amazing ecolodge called Bella Vista, I had the opportunity to zip line across the valley of the cloud forest. Our group climbed up the mountain to the first line, where a map showed the course – with a long series of zip lines stretching out zig-zag across the valley. The sign read, “Once you start, you must finish all zip lines to get to the pick up point. NO TURNING BACK!”

Taking the first leap was the most difficult. The first zip line was terrifying. And, if I’d of had a choice, I probably would have stopped there. But the sign told the truth; there was absolutely no turning back. So, onward I went, terrified and wondering how it was I had ended up in this particular place. I mean, how exactly did my body end up in a harness clipped onto a cable stretched above the trees across a massive valley in the cloud forest of Ecuador? It wasn’t until the third or fourth time that I was able to really pause and take in the scenery along the line. As I soared across the valley like a bird I looked all around me and it was truly breathtaking. I’ll never forget the freedom, the lightness, and the liberty of those moments up in the air with the clouds. Every time after that I got braver until on my final time I felt almost like I was meditating, completely calm and at peace in the air. I’m so glad I took that leap. I’m thankful there was no turning back.

Lotus by Juana Maria

Post July 28

My mom, Juana Maria Plum, sent me this beautiful painting as a thank you card. It was such a joy to open my mailbox and find this treasure! My mom is a master artist and is the inspiration for my own artwork. She taught me everything I know about color, beauty and form. She paints across mediums and is skilled in oils, acrylics and watercolor…not to mention wood carving, pottery, sewing (and more!). I am forever grateful that the talented Juana Maria is also my mom & master artist.
