Second Painting Finished

I’m so happy to have finished the second painting in my new Iowa Childhood series. Here I am with my brothers and our dogs and cat in the hammock under our twin pear trees. ūüćź ūüĆ≥ ūüĆ≥ ūüćź

About the series:

My new artwork series is a meditation on my childhood growing up off-the-grid in rural Iowa. My goal is to write a children‚Äôs book using this series of 20 paintings as the illustration for the book. Thank you to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation ‚Äď BeWildReWild ‚Äď Community Artist Grant for your generous support of my project.

Pear Tree Sketch – 2 of 20 Wild Plums Art Series

When I was a child, we lived on this beautiful hill in rural Iowa. There were two gorgeous pear trees next to the garden overlooking the countryside beyond.

Mom put up a hammock from Mexico. My brothers and I would play and read and take naps out there under the twin pear trees. Our dogs and cats would join us.

Here are a few pictures and a (new!) video of my “Pear Tree” painting still in progress.

Art Grant for New Book Project

It’s an exciting day! I’ve received a Community Art Gathering Grant from the BeWildReWild Fund at the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The grant is to create my newest children’s book – about growing up off the grid in rural Iowa. I’m filled with gratitude to have this opportunity.

The book will have a series of twenty watercolor paintings. Here I am with the very first drawing, all ready to paint. This one is, “Lupita Canning Corn.” These are the largest paintings I’ve ever made, by far. (The new paintings are 12×12 inches and I usually make 5×7 size.)

I’ve also added a new element to the Lupita paintings…a background. I’m experimenting with gauche paint for the background work. It’s challenging and exciting, both.

My favorite part of painting again is sharing the experience with my sons. The Captain is fascinated by Mama painting and joins me at the table to watch what I’m up to.

I’ll post updates on my new project here on my blog and also on my Emily Lupita Studio Facebook Page.

This is Week 14 of my A Year of Flowers art project. This week I made a sister for my Week 13 Lupita.

I just keep looking at these two lovely ladies. Wow, they are something really new and exciting for me as an artist.

This newest painting¬†is “Lupita with Daisies in Her Hair” and I love the expression on her face. Is she thinking of a long, faraway love? Is she about to laugh? Or cry? I don’t know…it’s a mystery and that’s what I like.

A Year of Flowers 2015 РWeek 11 at Emily Lupita Studio

I feel like this is a good time to take a look at where I’ve traveled so far this year with¬†my A Year of Flowers art project.¬†These are the first 10 paintings I’ve made during the first 10 weeks of 2015.

My Week 11 painting features flowering trees in a cool, crisp modern style. Something different!

I used Sakura ink & antique Irodori Japanese watercolors to paint the flowering trees, then added a background of handmade Japanese paper to create this art print.

2015 – The Year of Flowers

2015 РA Year of Flowers РThis Week at Emily Lupita Studio

Happy New Year!

I love¬†New Year’s Day. This is a wonderful time to reflect on our journey¬†and look forward to the coming year.¬†My New Year’s¬†resolution for my artwork this year is to keep¬†my heart open to the awesome possibilities and opportunities that await my creative spirit, however (and whenever/wherever ) they may manifest.

DSC_0686

Within that overall resolution, I do have one specific goal. I’d like to start (and finish) a “Yearly Project” – a self-imposed ritual where an artist makes the same¬†thing (one thing) every week for an entire year and shares it with the world. No skipping. The purpose of this type of project, as I see it, is to instill a sense of routine, to be responsible for sharing¬†once a week, to develop my technique, and just generally not to allow myself to give up on painting.

DSC_0685

So, I’ve decided that 2015 will be¬†A Year of Flowers.¬†I’ll be making one flower every week for the whole year and sharing it here. Those are the only guidelines…it could be a simple ink drawing of a single flower or a complete¬†watercolor garden painting. Or maybe Lupita with a flower in her hair.

DSC_0681

And so my A Year of Flowers project begins with my first flower. I painted a garden of peonies (above) and then added a bright yellow background (below) to create a joyful, happy art print.

[ The art print is now available here. ]

[I’ve just created a special page for photos from this project on my website here.]
