Second Painting Finished

I’m so happy to have finished the second painting in my new Iowa Childhood series. Here I am with my brothers and our dogs and cat in the hammock under our twin pear trees. ūüćź ūüĆ≥ ūüĆ≥ ūüćź

About the series:

My new artwork series is a meditation on my childhood growing up off-the-grid in rural Iowa. My goal is to write a children‚Äôs book using this series of 20 paintings as the illustration for the book. Thank you to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation ‚Äď BeWildReWild ‚Äď Community Artist Grant for your generous support of my project.

New Painting – Lupita and Her Captain 2.0

My newest painting is modeled after a photograph of me holding my son, Charlie. These are a few of the steps I went through to create the painting. I used an Apple Pencil and the software called Procreate. It’s very calming and relaxing for me to paint this way. I love playing with color and texture, with the different layers upon layers.

Introducing Our New Baby

Introducing our new baby, little Archer. He’s the sweetest tiny guy and it’s been such a beautiful and busy eight months since he was born. I’ve been wanting to add him into the family portrait painting I made before he came along. It’s taken me awhile, but I’ve finally finished. I thought it would be cool to show you my process for making portraits.

ArchiePortraitProcess1

I start out with a photograph that I love. In this case, I’m adding baby Archer to an existing painting, so I had a print out of the family portrait handy. That way I can match the style and colors.

ArchiePortraitProcess3

It usually takes me several tries to get the sketch how I like it. I begin with the basic form, then add in my Lupita style circles, chevrons, stars, stripes, and style. These are just two of the fifteen or so sketches I made on plain white paper. Then the fourth one is the final sketch on watercolor paper.

ArchiePortraitProcess4

Let the painting begin! I almost always start with the face then move outward in a circle from there. I’m not sure why…it just seems the most natural way for me to paint a person.

ArchiePortraitProcess2

Once the painting is complete, I scan it into my computer and use Photoshop to add it to the larger family portrait.

PlumGucluFamilywArchie

I hope to eventually re-paint the entire family portrait so all the colors match exactly. With two small children at home it may take some time, but one day soon! ūüôā

New Lupita Painting – The first in about a year

Lupita

‚ú® Life is a mystery. People we love get sick and we are overwhelmed with sorrow. Then there are these beautiful moments of joy…where the gorgeous sunrise awakens our spirit and the waves bring us beautiful shells to hold in our hands. We each have our own way of expressing and exploring this duality of life…through dance, music, sculpture, mathematics, song, art…and many other ways.¬†‚ú®

‚ú® It’s been so long since I’ve painted in any dedicated way, but when my spirit is looking to express itself, somehow I always find my way back to my Lupita paintings. It’s how I explore life in all it’s mystery. When there are no answers, I paint and create my own answers…perhaps?‚ú®

✨This is the first in a new series. Same Lupita spirit. Same watercolor & ink. A new perspective. ✨

Love & Blessings,

Emily Lupita

Week 11 – A Year of Flowers 2015 – “Modern Trees”

A Year of Flowers 2015 РWeek 11 at Emily Lupita Studio

I feel like this is a good time to take a look at where I’ve traveled so far this year with¬†my A Year of Flowers art project.¬†These are the first 10 paintings I’ve made during the first 10 weeks of 2015.

Weeks 1-6 A Year of Flowers
Weeks 7-10 A Year of Flowers
Weeks 7-10 A Year of Flowers

My Week 11 painting features flowering trees in a cool, crisp modern style. Something different!

I used Sakura ink & antique Irodori Japanese watercolors to paint the flowering trees, then added a background of handmade Japanese paper to create this art print.
